A 70’s Comeback

Spring may be the season of the Pisces, but it’s also the season of the octopus. Well, when we say octopus, we really mean the octopus haircut. In 2021, we were all about those trendy mullets and shag haircuts, but this year with spring approaching we are seeing more of the octopus cut. The 70’s are back, which means choppy layers and a lot more texture are in! If you are all about that 70’s trend and looking for a funky fresh style that will make your friends say “groovy baby,” then we have the perfect styles for you.

The Trendy Octopus 

With a more top-heavy style and choppy, visible layers spread out to the bottom, almost looking like octopus tentacles, that is how this take on the shag got its quirky name. We know you have most likely seen this trendy style all over TikTok and are probably feeling bold enough to try it out yourself!

Business in the Front, Party in the Back

Have you always wondered what that ‘business in the front, party in the back’ style could look like for you? We know it’s a bold new look, but so many people are experimenting with a variety of different versions. We have a few you may want to look into when finding the right style for you: 

The Mixie – Think mullet and pixie had a baby. A mixie is cut to be longer in the back, like a mullet with a shorter front, like a pixie. The length of the style is no longer than your shoulders and typically involves bangs to meet with your temple.

Shullet – Also known as the “wolf cut” on TikTok, shag meets mullet with this funky do. This is the perfect style for finer hair types, as it is known for adding a whole lot of texture to your hair. 

Curly Mullet – With mullets and natural hairstyles going strong this year, your naturally curly hair will fit in perfectly with this year’s 70’s trend. A curly version of the mullet will make your style stand out even more!

Lately, we see so many celebrities going back to their roots. This year means we will be seeing a lot more auburn, icy blonde, and midnight brunette. If you fall in the category of a natural blonde, brunette, or redhead, now is the time to enhance those colors with highlights and ombre styles. Winter time was always the most popular time to go darker, but this spring we are seeing a variety of brunette shades more than ever!

With the stigma of being a “beauty school dropout” surrounding a cosmetology career, you may be wondering if beauty school is the right decision for you. While traditional four-year universities are a great option for some, the rise of the “gig economy” shows those who attend trade schools are finding significant benefits as well.

If you’ve always loved beauty, receiving a professional beauty education could be your next step. Here are five reasons to consider beauty school over traditional college!

1. You Can Learn Hands-On

In beauty school, you can have the opportunity to practice your skills hands-on. Our student salon allows you to prepare for the real world by working on actual clients. You will be able to learn cutting, coloring, styling, and more as a student stylist under instructor supervision. This practical, real-world experience can help you feel ready for the salon once you graduate!

In college, you aren’t as likely to learn in such a hands-on, practical way. You may be required to participate in internships where you gain real-world experience, but most of the time you will likely be learning through textbooks and tests.

If bookwork isn’t really your thing, going to beauty school may be a better fit for you. While you may still need to complete occasional bookwork or take some written tests, the vast majority of your learning in beauty school will be hands-on.

2. It’s Typically Faster than College

Most college degrees are four-year degrees. However, data shows more students actually take up to six years to complete their college degrees. Trade schools, like beauty schools, are usually much faster to graduate from than traditional universities.

At Moler Beauty Academy, you can complete our cosmetology program in as little as 43 weeks. That’s less than a year. Our esthetics program can be completed even quicker—most of our esthetic students graduate in six to 12 months. Similarly, our manicuring program is 200 hours and can be completed in as little as two months.

One reason trade schools like beauty schools are typically faster than traditional college is that learning is more focused. In traditional college, you may spend the first year or two completing general education requirements before you ever get to the meat and bones of your major. In cosmetology school, though, you can start learning practical skills almost immediately.

Going to cosmetology school could help you graduate years sooner! All that extra time can kickstart your career, help you earn money, and gain you valuable experience faster.

3. You Could Graduate With Less Debt

Not only can cosmetology school help you enter the workforce faster, but you may also have less debt to pay off. ValuePenguin found one year at traditional public college averages $25,290 in state or $40,940 out of state. That’s just for one year. Factor in that most universities take at least four years to graduate from and compare that to the cost—both time and financial costs—of the average beauty school. At Moler Beauty Academy, you can expect to spend about $18,325 on tuition, fees, books, and supplies in our full-time cosmetology program.

That means that on average, you could save tens of thousands of dollars by choosing a beauty school over a traditional college. Most of the time, these costs are paid through financial aid like loans. These costs become debt and will ultimately need to be repaid. You can start to see just how much debt choosing a beauty school may save you in the long run!

4. You Can Express Your Creativity

Have you always considered yourself an artist at heart? As a beauty school student, you can express your creativity daily. While there are plenty of creative majors to choose from in college—like graphic design or creative writing—colleges are still often set up to favor left-brain individuals.

Left-brain refers to those who think analytically or mathematically. Right-brain refers to those who think artistically or creatively. Think about how much bookwork, reading, written work, or testing college typically has. These formats tend to favor left-brain thinkers. On the other hand, beauty school is all about creative thinking, like imagining a new cut or style for a client. This is a much more right-brain way of thinking.

Not sure if you are more left-brain or more right-brain? Here’s a quick test. Close your eyes and think about an apple. What do you see? Left-brain thinkers tend to have a hard time creating a mental image. They may see a basic, cartoon-looking apple or even just the word spelled out. Right-brain thinkers are more likely to see a detailed image in full color and maybe even a whole scene to go with it—a set table, or a teacher receiving a gift.

While we all are a mix of the two, if you are more right-brained, you may enjoy cosmetology school more than traditional college!

We love every part of the kit, but there are some pieces in the kit that are exceptional. For example, our kit features a GHD flat iron that normally retails for around $120, and a GHD blow dryer which is worth over $100 as well. These sorts of quality items can accompany a cosmetologist throughout their careers, and that’s why we make sure they are included in the kit. We want our students to have the best value possible!

A Kit For the Modern Beauty Professional

Moler Beauty Academy uses the Milady digital curriculum, which allows our students to access their textbooks and extra educational materials online from anywhere.

When do we Get Our Kits?

Students have the opportunity to receive their cosmetology kits once they have completed the first 450 hours of their cosmetology program. This is because students are still not working on the student salon floor, even after 450 hours. We wait to provide the kits because we want our students to understand what comes in the kit, how to take care of it, and what they use it for before they receive it. It’s common for students to lose items from their kit, so we didn’t want students to experience that before they even reached the salon floor. As soon as students have passed 450 hours, the kits are given out to help them prepare to work in the student salon on real clients!

Do We Have to Bring Our Kits to School?

With a beauty school full of students that receive identical cosmetology kits, people might wonder how we help students manage their tools. To make things as convenient as possible, we don’t require our students to bring most of their kits to school on a day-to-day basis. We provide things like brushes and combs so that students can keep theirs at home where they won’t get lost. Our students just bring in their major personal tools, such as shears, clippers, trimmers, flat irons, and blow dryers. We supply almost everything else so our students don’t have to worry about it! For the students who do want to bring their own supplies from home, we have cubbies and lockers that students can use to store their belongings.

What About Kits For Nails or Makeup?

You may already know that cosmetologists usually need to have a basic grasp of manicures, pedicures, and makeup in order to successfully pass the state licensing exam. This is why our program covers manicures, pedicures, and makeup on an introductory level. We’ve found that it’s common for our cosmetology students to not be as interested in nails or makeup, which is why our kits don’t include as many tools for those services. We do provide a basic nail kit and education to help students, but we also do not want students to have to pay for things they may not be excited about using. In case you weren’t aware that our great city has yearly beauty events, you can check out Sonic Space Recording’s recap of the Cincinnati Hair & Beauty Expo from 2015.

Besides catwalks and fierce fashion, the various Cincinnati Beauty Expos also like to highlight upcoming cosmetology, esthetics, barbering, and nail technician students. These are a great opportunity for you to flex those skills you’ve been learning, and make some new connections in the world of beauty. Take this event as an opportunity to learn from established cosmetologists and industry-leading professionals, but also use this event to show what you’ve learned. It’s equally important that you just enjoy all the beautiful things surrounding you, and make new friends!

There are a lot of amazing events surrounding beauty in Cincinnati. The ones you might like the most are Beauty & the Feast, Natural Hair Care & Health Expo, 1st Annual Cincinnati Makeup Palooza Event, and Beautiful Faces Going Places. Other Ways to Engage in Your Beauty Community

You’re doing everything you can to become the best beauty professional you can be. You’re not just taking classes, you’re taking on new clients, studying in your off hours, and asking the right questions. If you’re itching for even more you can do, look no further than your own community. All beauty professionals know that to be successful you need to set yourself apart in your local beauty community. You need to be able to prove to your customers why they should come to you for your services over someone else. The best way to do that? Personal branding.

Market Yourself on Social Media

It’s 2018, and therefore you should be no stranger to Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and YouTube. Beauty professionals know that to get noticed you need to get your content in front of the right audience, and the best way to do that is by using social media. This article about self promotion from Cosmetology License teaches us that.

There’s no denying the value of social media for marketing purposes. Instagram is a fantastic medium for highlighting happenings at your salon or charity work outside the salon, and Facebook is perfect for announcing special deals you are offering…don’t forget about Pinterest. You may even consider starting Pinterest boards…which [will] spread the word about your services.

The first thing to do on Instagram when promoting yourself as a cosmetologist, or esthetician, or anything else is to create a business page. Connect it to your professional Facebook page, and begin posting. Because you want this to be your career, you need to ensure that you establish your personal branding guidelines before just posting willy-nilly. Branding guidelines can be things like choosing complementary colors, deciding if you will use a grid, similar images throughout, or anything else that will help your Instagram page look cohesive. Notice how Guy uses a consistent layout that provides users with a sense of structure, while still promoting his personal brand and skillset? Guy does a great job of promoting his work without it coming off as too salesy! Follow him for a good example of what to shoot for.

Build Your Clientele While in Beauty School

Besides using social media, you can still work on your future while you’re still in school. When you’re working in our student salon* you can begin to flex your cosmetology skills as you work with new clients. A few tips for securing and maintaining new clients while still in school:

• – Build relationships by getting to know your clients.
• – Ask for help when needed, but always show confidence when working*.
• – Ask the client exactly what they want, and check on their expectations every so often. Use pictures to ensure you’ve got it right.
• – Without being pushy, ask clients to follow you on social media.
• – If they liked their service, let them know where you plan to work when you graduate so they can follow you there.

This can work to your advantage when you graduate, as you’ll already have plenty of people who can provide you with work and sometimes testimonials!

Get Started on 2019 With These Hairstyles

Even if you’re not a student of cosmetology and hair design it’s still helpful to know what’s going to be popular in 2019! We did a little digging and these are hair cuts and styles that are either currently popular or we think are going to be very popular in 2019! You can either try them out on yourself, or ask your instructors if they could include these in your assignments!

We pulled these ideas from places like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and beauty icons like Rihanna, so you know they’re on trend! Guido Palau, one of British Vogue’s contributing editors, had this to say about upcoming hairstyle trends:

“For a few years now, it’s been about embracing individuality and naturalness: the idea of really presenting everybody as the best version of themselves…now I think we’re seeing a resurgence of the fantasy of beauty as well.”

You’ve seen short hair, but we’re talking really short hair. Women and men around the world are shaving their heads very close to their skulls, and dyeing what’s left bright colors! Seems simple enough, but make sure you choose the right color for your skin tone!

As we mentioned, buns have always been in style. They’re easy, pretty, and timeless, right? The length of a cosmetology program varies by state and by school. In Ohio, 1,500 hours of training are required to be completed in a board-approved cosmetology school, according to the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board. Here’s how long you can expect to be in school if you enroll in the cosmetology program at Moler Beauty Academy.

Cosmetology at Moler Beauty Academy

Our cosmetology program can be completed in as little as 40 weeks. That’s approximately nine months of training and education. That means that you could be on your way to practicing cosmetology professionally in under a year! Of course, attendance will be a major player in getting your program completed on time. Being on-time and engaged for each class will set you up for success!

Advance Cosmetology at Moler Beauty Academy

If you want to further your cosmetology education and are looking to expand your knowledge, adding advance cosmetology to your schedule might be the right move. In Moler’s advance cosmetology program, you can take an additional 300 clock hour course to learn salon and business management. This program is for those who have already completed a cosmetology course, and it does require additional examination.

1. Get Enrolled

3. Pass the State Exam

You will take two tests as a part of the state exam. One is theory, which is a written test. The second is practical. The practical test requires that you physically demonstrate skills you’ve learned in school. At Moler Beauty Academy, we strive to help our students prepare to sit for the state board exam. We offer instruction and practice on several parts of the theoretical and practical sections.
