  1. Enroll in the right school
  2. Graduate
  3. Pass your exams and become licensed
  4. Get a career you love

Ohio has a lot to offer a newly licensed cosmetologist, and at Moler Beauty Academy we’re here to help you achieve your dream job!

Becoming a Cosmetologist in Ohio

Step 1 – Pick a School

The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology requires that persons who wish to become a licensed cosmetologist complete their required number of training hours at an approved school. You’ll want to choose a school that meets the state requirements and is a good fit for you. At Moler Beauty Academy, our 1500 hour cosmetology program can teach you everything you need to know about hair, makeup, skin care, nail technology, and more!

Choosing the right school and program is important because you’ll be doing all of your training there, and this will greatly impact your success as a cosmetologist! You want to choose a school that is state-approved, has the program you want, and offers the type of culture you’ll fit into. Here are some things to consider when choosing a school:

  • – What programs they offer
  • – The schedule options they have for your program
  • – The financial aid options
  • – The school and student culture
  • – Start dates
  • – Application process

Do your research to find which school is going to be the best choice for your needs. Consider your future, and be ready to dedicate the necessary time to get your license!

Apply to Your School of Choice

Once you’ve made your decision on which school you’d like to attend, you’ll need to apply. When you are preparing to apply, schedule a tour, or go in and talk to the admissions department to learn more. They can introduce you to the school and show you all they have to offer.

Figure Out the Financials

Some cosmetology schools, like Moler Beauty Academy, offer *financial aid and scholarships to students who qualify. To find out more about financial assistance options, schedule an interview with a financial aid administrator. The financial side of attending school can be the scariest part to face, but with a supportive team helping you, you can feel confident, happy, and ready to take your big step toward education!

Step 2 – Complete Your Schooling

Congratulations! You’re now officially a cosmetology student! Now is the time to really work. To be the most successful in your new schooling you will need to:

  • Attend all of your classes – Each program within your school has a minimum number of hours to complete in order to pass. Find a schedule that works for you and stick with it. Don’t take breaks from school if you can manage it!
  • Attend extra classes whenever possible – this will help you become more proficient in what you know, as well as learn new skills. This makes you more marketable to future employers!
  • Follow all the school’s rules – Make sure you dress and behave appropriately for your classes.
  • Have fun! – Beauty school is a great place to have a great time! Many of our students at Moler Beauty Academy have made lifelong friendships and have gone on to work together after graduation. Pay attention and enjoy learning this fun and rewarding skill!

Step 3 – Complete Steps to Obtain Your Cosmetology License!

Once you’ve completed your hours at your beauty school, it’s time to get your license. The requirements for this are different in every state. For Ohio, you will need to take a state exam after completing your necessary school hours. To learn how to register for this exam, you can go here.

Make sure you study and practice for this exam. Though you should have gathered all the information you need to pass during your time at school, it never hurts to get in a little more experience before taking a test! There are 2 exams you will need to pass: the theory and practical exams.

Cosmetology Theory Exam

This exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions. Below is a list of subjects you can expect to be tested on:

  • Infection control and safety (24%)
  • Product knowledge and chemistry (5%)
  • Implements, tools, and equipment (8%)
  • Anatomy and physiology (27%)
  • Hair care and services (22%)
  • Skin care and services (7%)
  • Nail care and services (7%)

Cosmetology Practical Exam

This is where you show off the skills and techniques you learned! The practical exam will consist of:

  • Set up and client protection (15 minutes)
  • Thermal curling (not timed)
  • Haircutting (30 minutes)
  • Chemical wave (20 minutes)
  • Hair color retouch (10 minutes)
  • Foil highlighting (10 minutes)
  • Relaxer retouch (10 minutes)
  • Chemical virgin relaxer (10 minutes)
  • Facial / manicure set-up (15 minutes)
  • Cleansing / facial massage (5 minutes)
  • Manicure (20 minutes)

Once you’ve passed your tests, you are now a licensed cosmetologist! Which means you only have one more thing to decide: what’s next?
