Is Esthetics a Good Career?

If you are obsessed with all things makeup and skincare, you may have wondered if a career in esthetics can pay off. Esthetics is the application and theory of different techniques to the epidermal layer of the skin. It includes, but is not limited to, steaming, waxing, extractions, chemical peels, and facials. Having an interest in skin care and health is key to any esthetician’s work.

At Moler Beauty Academy, our students can learn everything from relaxation massage to eyebrow tinting. It’s a versatile profession with many specialties and avenues to pursue. But is it the right next step for you? Take time to research and use this guide to discover the many benefits of working in esthetics.

Esthetician Requirements and Licensing

Before working toward beginning an education in esthetics, you need to know the requirements to become one. Estheticians must complete training or an education course and pass a state-written and practical examination in order to be state-licensed through their state-board of cosmetology or department of health.

To gain an esthetician license in Ohio, students must graduate from a 600-hour training program, apply and pass Ohio’s written and practical exams, and renew their license every year.

A Rewarding Career

As en esthetician, you may find many immediate and emotional rewards that come with the job. Working in a service-based career, estheticians see many different people and skin types each day. You get to know a client-base over time, and may build strong relationships with returning clients.

Being able to help others, provide solutions, or give advice is a feel-good perk to helping others with their skincare needs.

Many Options for Employment

There are many different facets to esthetics and a variety of careers you can choose from. In the our Esthetics program, you have the chance to study waxing, body wraps, makeup application, stone massage, microdermabrasion, and more. There are many kinds of therapies and treatments just as there are many ways to maintain each skin type. Estheticians also have a variety of career types to choose from, such as:

  • Makeup artist
  • Beauty brand representative
  • Medical esthetician
  • Spa/salon esthetician
  • & more!

As a professional esthetician you may have the chance to choose where you specialize and how you focus your education. You can find out if you’d be a better fit at an upscale spa or if you’d rather be in a small-town makeup studio.

Flexible Hours

Working as an esthetician means you may have some flexibility when it comes to pay and scheduling. Many clients tend to schedule beauty treatments on weekends or evenings, when they aren’t working. As you form your own client-base or if you one day own your own salon, you might adjust to your own timetables. This career can be flexible and may offer you unique opportunities a regular 9-5 job might not.

An Evolving Industry

One of the most exciting things about working in the beauty is that it is always evolving and changing. Trends come and go, and breakthroughs in science change the landscape of the industry.

As a professional, you may be looked to for advice on the best products and practices when it comes to personal care and grooming. Stay up-to-date and continue your education through learning new skills and knowledge.
