Whether you’re in a cosmetology program already, or you’re thinking of enrolling, the state board exam is probably on your mind. In order to become a licensed cosmetologist, you must pass the exam. Preparing for this test can seem daunting, but it’s crucial if you want to pass with flying colors! We want you to be well prepared when it comes to the exam, so we’re giving you a step-by-step guide so you know what to expect! To prepare for the Ohio state board of cosmetology test, follow these steps:

1. Apply for the exam

2. Study for the theoretical portion

3. Prepare materials for the practical exam

4. Get yourself exam-ready

Apply For the Exam

To get started on your exam application, you need to create an eLicense Ohio account. Once you’ve done this, log into your account on the same website and click “apply for a new license”. You then need to choose a license (cosmetology) and select your application type (examination). Following these steps, you will answer compliance questions, fill out personal information, provide your education history, and attach the required documentation. You’ll then review and submit your application before adding a method of payment.

Study For the Theoretical Portion

The theoretical portion of the exam is made up of 100 multiple choice questions, with 90 minutes given to complete it. Reviewing your coursework and creating study guides or flashcards is the best way to make sure you pass this portion of the test. The theoretical questions on the exam will cover the following:

1. Infection Control and Safety

2. Product Knowledge and Chemistry

3. Anatomy and Physiology

4. Implements, Tools, and Equipment

5. Hair Care and Services

6. Skin Care and Services

7. Nail Care and Services

Prepare Materials for the Practical Exam

During the practical exam, you will demonstrate your knowledge in hair, makeup, and nails via a mannequin head and hand. All mannequin heads and hands will be checked before the exam begins to ensure they are up to regulation. There is a thorough list of supplies that you should bring to your practical exam. Key items include hand sanitizer and disinfectant, shears/razor, cape, towel, protective gloves, tissues, curling iron, foils, and a spray bottle. There’s a lot more items to bring, so be sure to read the full list so you can be prepared! To eliminate any stress on the day of the exam, make sure you have these items well ahead of time.

Get Yourself Exam-Ready

When you attend your cosmetology exam, you need to be dressed professionally and appropriately. Acceptable options are a clean shirt with pants or a skirt, or a school uniform with clean shoes. Do not attend your exam in clothing you would wear to the beach or the gym and make sure clothes aren’t tight, revealing, or low-cut. A clean smock or apron can be worn over any professional clothing during the practical exam. Avoid any hassle on the day of your exam and make sure your clothing is clean, pressed, and ready to go. Additionally, to take your exam, you need to make sure you have one of the following forms of government-issued, current, valid photo ID:

1. Driver’s license

2. Military ID

3. U.S.A. passport

4. Other form of government identification

What Can I Do With a Cosmetology License After Passing the State Board?
