Start Your 2019 Right: Get Ahead in Your Beauty Career

Students: Here’s How to Get Ahead of the 2019 Beauty Curve

New year new you, right? Whether you’re an esthetics, cosmetology, nails, or other type of beauty student, there are plenty of ways to prepare for a new year. You can use 2019 as an opportunity to refocus your efforts at school, rebrand yourself as a beauty professional, or prepare for graduation. After graduation, you may have your pick on what you want to do! Move to a big city and pursue your big dreams in Atlanta or New York, or stay right here in Ohio and be close to home. Whatever your goals are, here are a few ways in which to prepare to accomplish them!

Get Organized

As a student you’re likely very busy. We’re talking classes, client appointments, attending beauty expos and events, balancing friend and family time, and work! We know you’re likely killing it at juggling your priorities, but who couldn’t benefit from a little organization? The best way to do it? A bullet journal.

Not sure that’s the style for you? Get even more organized (and cuter) with a bullet journal like Carrie Crista’s.

A few other quick ways to get organized are:

  •  – Deep clean – No time like a new year to really clean your space. Set out a few hours on a weekend where you can dedicate your time to scrubbing and dusting.
  •  – Declutter your space – Now that your space is clean, it’s time to donate clothing, furniture, books, and anything else you’re not using or is taking up too much space. Don’t be afraid to let go!
  •  – Organize everything – Your makeup is your best friend, we get it. But is it time to maybe throw a few of them away? Check all your products for their expiration dates and try to let go of a few.

Now that your home is in order, make sure you do the same for your space in the student salon!

Purchase New School Clothes

We know that one of the most frustrating things a beauty school student has to deal with is finding black clothing to wear each day. While we can’t change that rule, we do suggest you freshen your supply! This can help you feel ready for the day and the year, so be sure to vary the types of clothing you get (still meeting school standards), and can still mix and match outfits.

Restock Your School Supplies

If you’ve been at school for over a year, it’s likely you need to restock your supplies. We know how quickly alligator clips, bobby pins, and combs can go missing. While you can search the school and student salon floor for your missing items, you’ll appreciate having extras. You can purchase these wholesale from our school. Make it a goal this year to keep track of your items and see how many you can hold onto by the end of 2019!

Revisit Past Assignments

Are you close to graduation? Even if you aren’t, it’s always a good idea to revisit concepts you’ve already learned. Even if you feel like you’ve mastered something already, there’s no harm in going back and proving that to yourself. This can help you remember the steps, get better at it, and shows your instructors how committed to your profession you are.

The best way to accomplish this task is to ask your friends and family to visit you in the student salon. Ask your followers if anyone is looking for the treatment you’d like to practice, and invite them to come in. You can get a chance to practice, and your instructors can see your progress.

Begin Your Social Media Journey

As we talked about in our previous post, marketing yourself as a beauty professional is very important for your career. Even if you’re still in school you can begin marketing yourself and gaining attention for your future. The best way to do this is through Instagram and Facebook business profiles, separate from your personal profiles.

You can begin your personal promotion today, but you could also use the remaining time in the year to plan out your social posting. We outlined in the last post the importance of consistent branding in your profile, so it’s a good idea to plan out around your first 10-20 posts.

Begin Thinking About Post-Graduation

No matter if this is your first or last year in cosmetology school you should be thinking about your plan post-graduation. We’ve mentioned all the amazing jobs you could have as a cosmetologist, esthetician, or nail technician, but which is best for you? It’s time to enter research mode and determine where you’ll be happiest. You can consider salons, freelance, theater or film, and many others. Ask your instructors for help in figuring out what you want to do.
